Bulbs

Bulb is a general term used by gardeners for plants with a food-storage organ that allows them to grow and flower quickly once the optimum conditions occur. They may be true bulbs, such as daffodils and lilies; corns, such as crocuses; tubers, such as cyclamens and dahlias; or rhizomes, such as wood anemones. These "bulbs" have all evolved for different reasons, and have different flowering and resting periods.

There are two main seasons for us where bulbs or bulbous plants are concerned, Spring & Summer. Spring flowering bulbs arrive at the nursery in  late August/early September & include many of the favourites such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths & snowdrops. Generally speaking these need to be planted out by the end of Autumn so that they have time to settle in before the worst of the winter sets in. Tulips however are more resilient and will appreciate being planted a little later when the weather is a little cooler.

There are also some vegetable varieties which are available for autumn planting. Japanese onions, red onions, shallots, garlic and asparagus can be planted at this time of year in preparation for early cropping next year. Most of these should be in the ground and growing by the end of autumn.

Summer flowering bulbs arrive during January and include lilies, begonias and dahlias to name but a few. These require planting before the end of March however, the earlier the better as early establishment of root systems will reward you with correct flowering times and performance.

Our bulbs are supplied by Taylors Bulbs who have been dealing with us for several decades and supply trusted, quality bulbs at reasonable prices which we are able to pass onto our customers.

Most are supplied prepacked in various quantities depending on the variety. We also stock a limited range of daffodils in bulk bags which are suitable for landscapers or those with larger gardens.

Throughout the year we also offer many of these bulbs 'grown' or 'growing'. For example in early spring we'll be stocking ranges of snowdrops, daffodils, crocuses etc. in pots. Slightly later in the year we'll offer ranges of lilies, dahlias etc. growing and ready to be planted out for summer flowering.

Delivery

We do not operate an online ordering system for delivery.

We much prefer customers to visit in person and select the plants, pots, sundries etc. themselves. Then we can arrange delivery if required. This avoids any disappointment caused by plants not meeting customers criteria and also ensures you receive the items that you saw and chose.

Of course for bulky items such as compost, grits, gravels and water softener salt tablets we are more than happy to accept telephone orders for delivery.

Whilst there is no minimum spend for delivery there is a small charge to cover costs. Local delivery starts from £10 and this covers areas such as Gt Dunmow, Thaxted, Stansted, Elsenham and Bishop's Stortford. Areas beyond these incurr additional charges. Please ask for details.

PLEASE NOTE

Although we are 'traditional' we do accept all methods of payment including credit/debit cards, Apple or Android pay, our own Gift Vouchers and of course good old fashioned cash!
